CHISINAU (Sputnik) – According to Colintineanu, a girl tested positive for the disease shortly after returning from a trip to Caribbean island Martinique. She went to hospital only two days after arrival.
"Her case is a one-off incident and it is associated with traveling in the area with active transmission of the virus. We are not talking about the infection within the Romanian territory, but about the so-called case of delivery," Colintineanu said.
The current Zika outbreak originated in Brazil in the spring of 2015, spread across Latin America and gained much media attention as confirmations of first cases emerged in Europe and the United States.
The Zika virus is spread by the Aedes mosquito and is almost innocuous to adults but can be dangerous for pregnant women as their babies may be born with neurological disorders, including microcephaly.
