MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated the United Kingdom's new Prime Minister Theresa May with her new post heading the UK government, expressing the desire for constructive UK-Russian dialogue, the Kremlin said Wednesday.
"Putin sent wires to the member of House of Commons of the United Kingdom David Cameron in regard to the end of his tenure as the UK prime minister, as well as to the UK Prime Minister Theresa May regarding her appointment to the post," the Kremlin said in a statement.
The Russian president thanked Cameron for his cooperation while heading the UK government, expressing confidence that UK-Russian relations can be used to ensure peace and security. In his message to May, Putin stressed than the cooperation potential between the two countries is within the interest of both sides.
"Putin confirmed the spirit of constructive dialogue and joint work with the UK prime minister over important matters of bilateral relations and the international situation," the Kremlin said.
