MOSCOW (Sputnik) – FBI officers and Cleveland police have been asking local protesters about their plans for the convention and jail facilities that could house a total of over 970 arrested protesters are in the process of being identified, the newspaper said on Wednesday.
"What people should know is that Cleveland is prepared, that we will put on a safe and successful convention," Mayor Frank G. Jackson told The New York Times, adding that police will initially be "in regular uniforms" but if "there is a need to deal with something that is more aggressive, they will escalate according to the need."
The Republican National Convention will take place in Cleveland, Ohio on July 18-21.
An American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) official told Sputnik on Wednesday that Cleveland police are expected to uphold revised regulations on space restrictions to ensure freedom of speech and assembly at the convention.
