KHARTOUM (Sputnik) — Syria must achieve harmony between the government and opposition to get back its place in the League of Arab States, the league's secretary-general said Thursday.
Syria's membership of the Arab League was suspended in 2011 after the beginning of violent protests in the country, which has later grown into a civil war.
"To return the place, an agreement should be achieved in Syria between the government and opposition," Ahmed Aboul Gheit said in a speech during his visit to the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.
The 22-member Arab League was created in 1945 to "safeguard their independence and sovereignty, and to consider in a general way the affairs and interests of the Arab countries," according to the Pact of the League of Arab States.
