"The United States and France have made important progress in enhancing our security relationship," Earnest stated.
The press secretary said that shortly after terrorist attacks in Paris in November, the US and French authorities agreed on enhanced information sharing.
"The Secretary of Defense and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence did succeed in working with the French to reach an enhanced information sharing relationship," Earnest said.
The press secretary noted that earlier in 2016, Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco completed an arrangement with her French counterpart to enhance data sharing, while Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson has been regularly in touch with the French authorities.
"There are additional steps… our European allies should take," Earnest underscored.
On Thursday night, a truck rammed into a large crowd that was celebrating Bastille Day in Nice. According to identification documents found inside the truck, the driver was a 31-year-old male resident of Nice of Tunisian origin. At least 84 people, including children, were killed and dozens of others were injured.
