ANKARA (Sputnik) – Late on Friday, Turkish authorities said that an attempted coup d'etat took place in the country. The coup was suppressed several hours later. Soon after the coup attempt, both Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Yildirim said that capital punishment could be reinstated in the country.
"We are not going to rush the introduction of the death penalty, this issue needs to be discussed, it will not be quick. We intend to act in a legal way," Yildirim told a government session.
Earlier in the day, EU foreign policy chief condemned Ankara's intention to return to death penalty.
