MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, it was reported that a court in Bahrain dissolved the Al-Wefaq opposition group and liquidated its funds. The court found that the group started to encourage people to take part in mass protests and incited to violence.
"The Secretary-General deplores the dissolution of Al-Wefaq, the main opposition political party in Bahrain. The move is the latest in a series of restrictions of the rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of association, and freedom of expression in Bahrain," the statement reads.
The secretary-general also noted that the dissolution of Al-Wefaq could lead to the escalation of tense situation in the country.
"He calls for the resumption of an all-inclusive national dialogue in the interest of peace and stability of Bahrain and the region," the statement continues.
