US Would Take No Position on Any Move to Revive Death Penalty in Turkey

The United States will not intervene in any way to oppose possible moves by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to reintroduce the death penalty in Turkey following the failed military coup, US Department of State spokesperson Mark Toner said in a briefing on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Turkey has arrested at least 70 generals and admirals following Friday’s unsuccessful coup by members of the Turkish military.

In wider signs of a massive purge, 21,000 teachers have been fired across the country and the dean of every university in Turkey has been suspended.

"It's not for us to support or not support," Toner stated. "We don't have role to play about whether another government would consider that option [the death penalty]."

The European Union has warned Turkey that any reintroduction of the death penalty would be viewed by Brussels as a "deal-breaker" that would end the country’s efforts to join the bloc.
