On Tuesday, armed men attacked a military base in Mali’s central town of Nampala, as a result, 17 soldiers were killed and over 30 others were injured. Islamist militants claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mali’s government said a national mourning for the victims of the attack will start on Thursday and that a state of emergency would last ten days. A previous state of emergency period, introduced in April, ended in Mali on July 15.

Mali has been in turmoil since a 2012 military coup that saw separatist Tuareg tribes seize control over large areas in the northern part of the country. Islamist groups that emerged in Mali in the last decade have recently staged several terrorist attacks in the country.
