KHARTOUM (Sputnik) – Sudan is in talks with the United States on an agreement to lift anti-Sudan sanctions in exchange for cooperation in combating terrorism and illegal migration, Sudanese presidential aide Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid told Sputnik on Wednesday.
Washington imposed economic, trade and financial restrictions on Khartoum in 1997 on accusations of state support for terrorism, destabilizing neighboring states and violating human rights. The US extended the sanctions regime a decade leader over the Darfur conflict.
“Such an agreement would contribute in defusing relations. We have agreed that we will together solve our problems in the common interest of stability,” Hamid said.
He noted that the United States’ interests are linked with anti-terrorism and undocumented migration, while Sudan wants to emerge out of economic isolation and see itself removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
