WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Democratic candidate Clinton has long backed proposals to naturalize illegal immigrants in contrast to Trump’s call for deporting illegal immigrants.
"Perhaps not surprisingly, given the greater support for a path to citizenship than deportation or building a wall on the US-Mexico border, Americans are more likely to say Hillary Clinton's immigration policies and proposals, rather than Trump's, come closer to their own," a press release accompanying the poll explained.
Overall, 84 percent of likely US voters surveyed support the path to citizenship, the release explained.
Some 62 percent of Republicans back Trump’s other immigration proposal, to build a wall along the US-Mexican border, compared with 12 percent of Democrats and 33 percent of likely voters who are affiliated with neither party.
More Republicans Support Granting US Citizenship to Migrants Than Building Wall
More Republican voters favor granting undocumented immigrants US citizenship if they meet certain criteria than sending them out and building a wall, a new poll revealed Wednesday.
A Gallup poll, conducted between June 7 and July 1 among over 3,000 US adults, found that 76 percent of Republicans support the idea of allowing migrants who have crossed into the country illegally to stay and naturalize in due time.
GOP-affiliated respondents were divided 50 percent to 48 percent on whether undocumented immigrants should be sent back to their home countries. Sixty-two percent said they favored building a wall along the entire southern border.
In contrast, around two-thirds of US adults polled said they support a path to citizenship for migrants, with the strongest support coming from the Democrats (91 percent). They were also the likeliest to oppose deportations and building walls, 83 and 88 percent respectively.
