If there’s one thing the Grand Old Party is known for, it’s being more than a bit old fashioned. Party leaders regularly spout the necessity of maintaining "traditional Christian values," and resisting a purported and much-feared "gay agenda."
Evidently, attendees of this week’s convention in Cleveland haven’t done a good job with either, as Craigslist ads for male-on-male "casual encounters" in the host city have spiked over the last few days.
"We can’t confirm the authenticity of a lot of these ads, nor can we read a lot of them on air because they’re quite explicit," said Sam Sacks of Radio Sputnik’s Unanimous Dissent.
"Married guy seeks another married guy," one such ad reads, while another seeks "any beefy hairy RNC visitors."
Separately, the New York Post has contacted a number of gay escort services working in the city, and male prostitutes report that business is booming.
"I normally only make $200 to $300, but I’ve been seeing lots of guys in hotels downtown," one escort told the Post. Since Monday, he claims to have earned roughly $1,600.
"When it comes to anything people aren’t supposed to be doing, they like to do it," another escort said. "The Republicans have a lot of delegates in the closet, let’s put it that way."
"Most of them were first-timers. You could tell they were nervous, but once they became more comfortable, they seemed to be having a good time," a third escort said.
Female prostitutes, on the other hand, have seen their profits decline during the convention.
"Has business been better for me? Honestly no," a female escort told the Post. "Business is slower than usual. I haven’t been getting many calls," said another.
While Republican delegates are free to live their private lives as they choose, it’s hard to ignore the hypocrisy.
"Live it up," Unanimous Dissent’s Sam Knight said, encouraging consenting adults to enjoy themselves in any manner they see fit that does not increase suffering.
"I wish that you were fine with other people living it up in the moment, or in public, however, they want to live their lives."
