Street Drive: Delhi Government to Train Street Food Vendors

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) — As a part of the Delhi government's plan to ensure clean, wholesome and unadulterated food for the public in India's capital, street food vendors will be trained in food storage and handling techniques and offered classes in hygiene.

The Delhi government's Drug Control and Food Safety Department is set to take on the task of training the city's street food vendors. The vendors will be issued certification on the basis of their performance after undergoing a test. Vendors can then display their certificates, which will serve as a mark of quality and assure the public that they observe proper hygiene standards.

According to Drug Control and Food Safety Department, "The Department will train and educate 23,000 street food vendors to ensure clean, wholesome and unadulterated food for the public. The trained vendors will be issued certificates and skill cards. In first phase, 18,000 vendors will undergo training and education on how to ensure hygiene in their food items while serving them to people."

Apart from its rich historical heritage, Delhi has been blessed with a wide array of appetizing street food that has evolved over the centuries. Recently, however, concerns have been raised regarding the hygiene standards of these street food vendors. Therefore, the municipal government has decided that training these vendors and informing them about hygiene and food safety will improve the quality of street food in Delhi.
