MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Trump told The New York Times in an interview published Wednesday that if he becomes US president, he would only support other NATO states should they be attacked by Russia if the allies had "fulfilled their obligations" in respect to Washington.
"For decades, the United States has given an ironclad guarantee to our NATO allies: we will come to their defense if they are attacked, just as they came to our defense after 9/11. Donald Trump was asked if he would honor that guarantee. He said… maybe, maybe not… Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit and fundamentally ill-prepared to be our Commander in Chief," Jake Sullivan said.
In the past, Trump has repeatedly said that if elected president he would require major US allies make larger contributions to the military bloc.
The US presidential election is scheduled to be held on November 8, 2016.
