MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Turkish government has imposed a three-month state of emergency after last Friday’s failed military coup, granting the president greater powers to continue a crackdown on dissidents.
Jagland said in a statement that derogation from the international pact, which enshrined the right to life and banned torture, was allowed "in times of public emergency." This article has recently been invoked by France and Ukraine.
"It is important to note that the European Convention on Human Rights will continue to apply in Turkey," he said, adding that key clauses could not be suspended.
This comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview with Al Jazeera on Wednesday that his administration would reinstate the death penalty if such was the will of the people.
