“Pacific partnership opens the cage,” the song lyrics go. “Latin America should not be the emptying center.”
In an interview with Sputnik, Daniel Devita commented on his motives and the aims of his creativity.
“TPP poses a threat to any state which values its freedom and sovereignty. This theme has concerned me for a long time and I planned to write something touching it.”
The Latin American rapper recorded a video together with the movement “Argentina without TPP”, a grass roots organization principally aimed at exposing the danger of such agreements.
“The main goal is to encourage a discussion about the Pacific alliance within the framework of a political and information agenda and warn society of its dangers.”
Meanwhile, this is not the first radical song he wrote. Doble D has addressed current issues in the language of rap for 10 years already.
“For me, music is not some kind of political goal, but rather a powerful instrument for undermining human misery, the help of which I can use to convey ideas allowing us to retrieve lasting freedom from the colonial yoke,” Daniel relays.
Several months ago, Daniel’s track “¿Querías globos?”, translated as “Want yellow ballons?” was released. The author wants to show his audience that Argentinian government plans to join TPP.
The artist admits that people react differently to his lyrics, and there is more to achieve to change people’s thinking.
“Those who are convinced that the mass media is telling the truth hate and insult me. Others, who see reality and acknowledge that the mass media, together with neoliberal governing agencies and corporations, misinform the public, support me. What I am doing here requires time as cultural decolonization does not happen in a day.”
In October, 12 countries of the Pacific Rim region, including Canada and the United States, reached an agreement on the TPP agreement, intended to deregulate trade among the signatories, which together make up some 40 percent of the world economy. The deal has yet to be ratified by the signatory countries.
