"The efforts of the 'Ike-Battle Axe' team have and will continue to be instrumental in the fight against ISIL [Islamic State]," Carrier Air Wing 3 commander Capt. Jeffrey Anderson stated.
Between June 28 and July 8, Carrier Air Wing 3 completed 116 sorties from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea in support of coalition operations, the Navy noted.
The strike group is deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the US 5th Fleet area of operations.
The US-led coalition of more than 60 nations has been carrying out airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq since the summer of 2014. The terror group, which is also known as Daesh, is outlawed in the United States, Russia and numerous other countries.
