"We encourage al-Zinki [sic] to investigate the incident and expect all parties to comply with their obligations under the law of armed conflict," the official stated. "We note that al-Zinki has said they will investigate this incident, and we hope they do so thoroughly and transparently."
The official also declared that the US does not support Syrian opposition groups that condone such barbaric acts.
"We strongly condemn what appears to be the brutal murder of a minor [by al-Zenki]," the official stated about the beheading of a child in Syria. "We do not support groups that condone this sort of barbarity, period."
On Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Mark Toner said the United States would reconsider providing aid to al-Zenki if reports are confirmed that members of the Syrian faction beheaded a child.
