MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The German Army is launching a pilot project to train more than 100 Syrian refugees in civilian skills like logistics, medicine and machinery, the country's Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday.
"The German Army is starting a pilot project to train over 100 refugees in civilian occupations," Von der Leyen said, as quoted by FAZ newspaper.
According to the German minister, the project envisages that the trainees will put their knowledge into practice upon arrival to Syria after the end of the civil war there.
"The idea is that one day they will be back in Syria helping with recovery," Von der Leyen added.
The European Union is currently struggling to manage a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people leaving conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty and seeking asylum in Europe. In 2015 more than 1 million migrants and asylum seekers arrived to Germany.
