WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, two knife-wielding men stabbed a priest to death after taking five people hostage inside a church in a small commune near Rouen. The Daesh terror group, banned in many countries including Russia, claimed responsibility for the murder.
“We commend French law enforcement for their quick and decisive response and stand ready to assist the French authorities in their investigation going forward,” Price said. “France and the United States share a commitment to protecting religious liberty for those of all faiths, and today's violence will not shake that commitment.”
Price also offered condolences to the priest's family and friends, and the victims of the assault.
The two attackers were killed by French security forces. Local media reported that police also took an underage person into custody in connection with the church attack.
He supposedly knows one of the attackers who was ordered to wear an electronic bracelet by a judge after returning to France in March 2015 from Turkey, where he was stopped from crossing into Syria to fight alongside Daesh militants.
