MOSCOW (Sputnik) — United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein on Wednesday called on Indonesia to promptly stop executions, following reports that the country may hold a next round of executions later in the week.
On Monday, the authorities of Indonesia confirmed that 14 prisoners, including nationals from foreign countries, could be executed as early as July 29, mostly for drug trafficking.
“The increasing use of the death penalty in Indonesia is terribly worrying, and I urge the Government to immediately end this practice which is unjust and incompatible with human rights,” Zeid said, as quoted in a press statement.
Indonesia resumed executions in 2013 and since that time has killed 19 prisoners, according to Amnesty International watchdog.
