The train station is one block away from the US Capitol building, located in the heart of DC. The incident came at the height of evening rush hour.

Union Station is a converging point for DC's metro, Amtrak rail lines, and other regional trains from neighboring Maryland. Metro lines through the station were exit only, while all other trains, including those bound for Virgina and Maryland, were halted.
