MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Establishment of humanitarian corridors from Aleppo is a positive development, but the real improvement of the situation can be achieved only with 48-hour weekly pauses in fighting so that humanitarian aid can be delivered, Senior Adviser to UN Special Envoy for Syria on humanitarian issues Jan Egeland told Sputnik.
"It is important to study any and all humanitarian initiatives, it is always good that civilians are allowed to leave voluntarily the battled scene. But what we have also asked for is 48-hour pause in the fighting every week so that we can get humanitarian supplies into Aleppo… So we would urge Russia and the Syrian government to allow humanitarian supplies in every week," Egeland said.
Russia and the Syrian government have launched a joint large-scale humanitarian relief operation in Aleppo, establishing three corridors for civilians and one for militants wishing to lay down arms, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said earlier on Thursday.
