ANKARA (Sputnik) — New appointments follow the failed coup attempt in Turkey, after which 163 generals and admirals were detained, what constitutes 40 percent of the total number. Eighty-seven out of 198 generals in the Army were dismissed, 30 of 72 in the Air Force, seven out of 32 in the Turkish Gendarmerie General Command, and in the Navy 32 of 55 admirals.
There are 94 new appointments in the Army Command, the Air Force has 44 new appointments and in the Navy there are 22 admirals' appointments.
On July 15, an attempted coup took place in Turkey, and was suppressed by the following day. Over 240 people were killed during the coup attempt and an estimated 2,000 were wounded. Ankara has accused US-based dissident Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and his followers of having played a key role in the coup. Gulen has denied the accusations.
