WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Al-Shabab, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and Boko Haram, Sewall noted, and other groups threaten Africa's every aspiration and achievement and must be defeated and their safe havens destroyed.
“Religiously motivated violent extremism is on the rise in Africa,” Sewall stated on Monday. “It is not limited to one part of Africa. It is East Africa. It is West Africa. It is sub-Saharan Africa. It is the Maghreb.”
In Somalia, years of anarchy led some to welcome al-Shabab and alleged abuses by the Ethiopian military in that country also boosted support for the extremist group, Sewall said.
The Daesh banned in Russia and other countries, was also seeking new footholds throughout Africa, Sewall observed.
