DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, an informed source told RIA Novosti that the Syrian army, supported from air, managed to repel the Daesh attacks in the west of the city.
Deir ez-Zor, a major Syrian eastern city with population of over 200,000 people, has been besieged by Daesh, extremist groups outlawed in Russia, since March 2014.
Syria has been in the state of civil war since 2011. On February 27, a ceasefire brokered by Russia and the United States took effect in the country. Terrorist groups are not covered by the agreement.
