The nuclear deal reached by the international community with Iran is worse than anticipated, US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce said in a statement commenting on reports that the US government transferred $400 million to Tehran in exchange for the release of four Americans.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Wall Street Journal reported earlier in the day that the Obama administration secretly organized an airlift of $400 million worth of cash to Tehran that coincided with the January release of four US citizens detained in Iran.

"We already know the Iran nuclear deal was a historic mistake. It keeps getting worse," Royce stated.

According to the publication, wooden pallets stacked with euros, Swiss francs and other currencies were flown into Iran on an unmarked cargo plane, as the US law forbids transacting US dollars with Iran.

At the same time, the United States was negotiating a prisoner exchange with Iran, raising doubts among Republicans that money had changed hands to guarantee the release as a ransom payment.

Royce argued that the alleged ransom payment would put more US citizens' lives in jeopardy.

"Hundreds of millions in the pockets of a terrorist regime means a more dangerous region, period," he said.

On Wednesday, US State Department spokesman John Kirby denied the money transfer.
