The missile was launched from the North Korean province of Hwanghae-Namdo toward the Sea of Japan, Yonhap news agency reports, citing the South Korean military.
Pyongyang has launched a number of missiles in recent months, and also conducted nuclear tests. Both have been condemned by the international community, including Russia, China, the United States, and the United Nations. Harsh new sanctions have been implemented against the country.
The DPRK claims to have developed a miniaturized nuclear warhead that could, theoretically, be launched with an intercontinental missile.
The United States has used these tests as justification for the installation of a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system on the peninsula, despite criticism from both China and Russia that the battery threatens their own national security.
The latest test comes after Pyongyang's outrage over the THAAD deployment.
