The US Missile Defense Agency has ordered 47 new Standard Missile 3 (SM-3) missile interceptors costing more than half a billion dollars, the US Department of Defense said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The order could be repeated on the same scale in fiscal years 2017 and 2018, the Defense Department added.

"Raytheon Missile Systems Company [of] Tucson, Arizona, is being awarded a $523.9 million… contract [to] test and deliver 47 SM-3 Block IB missiles for fiscal 2016," the release, issued on Tuesday, stated.

The Department of Defense plans to arm its Aegis Ashore system to be deployed in Poland in 2018 with land-based SM-3s as part of the European missile shield.
