CARACAS/MONTEVIDEO (Sputnik) – Deyab, who has been residing in Uruguay since he was released from the Guantanamo prison in December 2014, "is under humanitarian shelter and administrative process of deportation," said SEBIN inspector Marco Alberto Maestre, without specifying when or which country the Syrian will be deported to.
According to a source in the embassy of Uruguay in Venezuela, Deyab was intercepted on July 26 when he left the Uruguayan consulate in Caracas.
Jihad Deyab, 45, has spent over 12 years in the US Guantanamo Bay prison camp, but was never charged with a crime. He enjoys a refugee status granted by the Uruguayan government and has no legal prohibition to leave the country.
