MOSCOW (Sputnik) — South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) leads the local government election by more than 25 percent of votes, results published by the Independent Electoral Commission.
South Africans went to polls on Wednesday to elect district and local municipal councils in all nine provinces.
President Jacob Zuma’s leftist ANC has 53.9 percent of votes and 57 councils. The opposition center-right Democratic Alliance (DA) trails behind with 26.89 percent of the vote and 11 councils. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), a Socialist party, has 7.58 percent of votes but no councils.
The elections are held a month after a court ordered Zuma to pay back over $500,000 he had spent on upgrades to his private Nkandla home. The president’s second term ends in 2019.
