MADRID (Sputnik) — High risk of fires, caused by high temperatures, has been declared in most Spanish regions, including the Balearic and Canary islands, the state Meteorological Agency (Aemet) said Thursday.
Extremely high temperatures from 36 (96.8 Fahrenheit) to 40 degrees Celsius have set in almost 20 provinces, in the south and east of the country, as well as on the Mallorca Island.
The General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies asked the citizens not to throw away cigarettes, bottles and garbage to avoid fires. It is also prohibited to make a fire in mountains and parks.
Earlier in the day, about 700 people were reportedly evacuated on the Spanish island of Palma due to a wildfire that also claimed life of a park ranger. Spanish police have also arrested a German citizen, whose actions drove to the fire.
