Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan will meet with the leaders of five African countries next week to discuss global security issues, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) said in a press release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – In July, Sajjan told reporters in a conference call that Canada was assessing requests to provide peacekeeping forces in far-flung regions of the world, including Colombia and conflict zones in Africa.

“Defense Minister Harjit S. Sajjan will visit the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from August 9-16, 2016,” the release stated on Thursday.

During scheduled meetings with government officials from each respective country, the minister will explain Canada’s peacemaking mission, the release noted.

"This visit will help inform Canada’s re-engagement in peace operations and support its ongoing work related to Canada’s Defense Policy Review," the release added.

Canada values its deep relationship with African partners and recognizes the importance of a strong African voice in addressing global security problems, the release said.
