The rescued individuals are reportedly the new owners of the building, according to local media. While conducting a walkthrough of their new property, the two individuals were taken at gunpoint by the suspect, who may have been a squatter.

Early reports suggested the suspect was armed with a shotgun, though it now appears the weapon was only a bb gun.
The suspect is in custody.
The incident occurred at 451 Frelinghuysen Avenue, blocks from Newark Liberty International Airport.
