MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Even the most ambitious global environmental agreements depend on individual action and determination to implement them, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) head Erik Solheim said in a statement published on Sunday.
Solheim made his statement after volunteers finished cleaning the Versova Beach in Mumbai, collecting 1.3 million kilograms (2.8 million pounds) of rubbish.
"It reminds the rest of the world that even the most ambitious, global agreements are only as good as the individual action and determination that bring them to life," Solheim said in the statement on the UNEP website.
The cleaning of the Versova Beach, initiated by local residents Afroz Shah and Harbanash Mathur, who were joined by a number of people of different age and background, became the largest beach clean-up in history.
