The military commander of the Iranian delegation said he expected the Army Games to boost Moscow-Tehran ties.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The 2016 International Army Games (IAG) will serve to strengthen relations with Russia and facilitate the exchange of experience between the countries' troops, the military commander of the Iranian delegation to the Elbrus Ring competition, Gen. Nuzar Nemati, said on Monday.

"We expect that this competition will strengthen relations between Russia and Iran, and the exchange of experience will continue," Nemati told reporters.

Russia, China, Iran and Kazakhstan are taking part in the 10-day Elbrus Ring contest, which started on August 1. The competition consists of 14 special tasks, including climbing the 18,510-foot high Elbrus Mountain.

The Russian team is tipped to win the competition, 'however, the level of mountain training of all the teams participating in the contest is at a very high professional level," Nemati added.

After 12 of the special tasks, the Iranian team is in fourth place, while the Russian team is in the lead, followed by the Chinese and Kazakh teams.

The international stage of the contest will wrap up on August 11.

Russia is currently hosting the IAG, which started on July 30. The event features competitions in 23 disciplines. A total of 121 teams from 19 countries from across the world are taking part in the IAG which are being monitored by observers from 11 countries.
