ST PETERSBURG (Sputnik) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the Russian city of St. Petersburg for the first talks to reset bilateral relations after the November 2015 downing of a Russian aircraft by Ankara earlier in the day.
"I want to stress that this is our principal position, we are always strongly opposed to any attempts of unconstitutional actions… I was one of the first to call the president and expressed my support in overcoming the intra-political crisis linked to the coup," Putin said at the meeting with Erdogan.
The Russian president expressed hope that the Turkish people under the leadership of Erdogan would overcome the crisis, and order would be restored.
Erdogan, in turn, said he welcomed Putin’s call.
"Indeed, your call straight after the coup attempt made my colleagues, our people and myself very glad," the Turkish president said.
