Speaking during a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump seemed to insinuate that gun-owners could prevent Hillary Clinton from appointing judges.

"If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks," Trump said to a jeering crowd. "Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don’t know."

The Second Amendment protects the right of US citizens to "keep and bear arms."

A statement from the Trump campaign claims that the comments were actually about "great political power" of Second Amendment supporters.

In response, the Clinton campaign released a statement calling Trump's comments "dangerous."

The comment is the latest escalation of the candidate’s provocative rhetoric. Trump came under fire last week for a number of controversial statements, including repeated attacks on the family of a deceased US soldier.

A number of high-profile Republicans have begun to retract their endorsements of the presidential hopeful.
