Most of the detentions occurred in Curridabat, eastern suburb of the country’s capital of San Jose, and near the Juan Santamaria International Airport in the province of Alajuela. Detained protesters will be reportedly charged for obstructing traffic and causing disorder on public roads.
Police are also said to have seized 33 cars.
According to National Police Director Juan Jose Andrade, a group of taxi drivers injured three police officers resisting detention in the city of San Pedro. One of the officers was sent to hospital after the incident.
By the end of 2015, Uber had provided more than 1 billion rides globally, but the company is constantly searching for new business opportunities amid increasing competition for drivers and passengers from new ride-sharing services. It is widely criticized by taxi drivers, who accuse the company of unfair competition.
