Germany Welcomes Meeting Between Putin, Erdogan - Foreign Ministry
13:29 GMT 10.08.2016 (Updated: 10:53 GMT 24.01.2023) Berlin welcomes the meeting of Russian and Turkish presidents, which symbolizes political and economic rapprochement between these two states, German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli said Wednesday.
BERLIN (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in St. Petersburg for the first talks to reset bilateral relations after the November 2015 downing of a Russian aircraft by Turkey.
"We welcome the fact that after months of tensions the two countries are seeking rapprochement," Chebli told reporters.
According to Chebli, Berlin does not consider the Putin-Erdogan meeting to be a step against Europe.
"We think it is obvious that this [meeting] is not directed against Europe… the desire for rapprochement with Russia does not mean cessation of further cooperation with Europe. We need Turkey and Turkey needs us, we have a lot of common interests," Chebli added.
During the meeting, Putin and Erdogan agreed on a series of measures to boost economic and other ties between Russia and Turkey and to return to cooperation at the pre-crisis level.
