Mayor of London Sadiq Khan called on Wednesday to postpone the process of Brexit until after next parliamentary elections in France and Germany in fall 2017 to ensure better exiting terms for the United Kingdom and access to the single EU market.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Brexit negotiators must be careful not to trigger Article 50 too soon as "if we serve notice too quick to quit there's no guarantee jobs won't leave," according to the mayor.

"Now it's for them [UK European negotiators] to persuade the EU how we can get the best of both worlds, how it's possible to have access to the single market and not have free movement of labour. Maybe waiting for French and German elections to be out of the way gives the new French president or German chancellor more of a chance for latitude for some of the things that the British public say we need," Khan told Sky News broadcaster.

UK Banks Line Up to Announce Losses and Blame Brexit
On June 23, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit, while about 16.1 million opposed it.

The United Kingdom is now expected to invoke Article 50 of the EU Lisbon Treaty to initiate the formal process of withdrawal from the bloc and start talks with the EU leaders on the new format of their relations.
