Boots on the Ground? US Forces Active in Libya, Fighting Near Sirte
ROME (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti said that Italy was ready to let the United States use its military bases, in particular Naval Air Station Sigonella, to support the US airstrikes against the Daesh in Libya.

"We have no military missions in Libya," Gentiloni told Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, adding that Rome allows Washington to use Italian military bases for its campaign in the North African country.

On August 1, the United States began an aerial campaign against Daesh at the request of and in coordination with Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA).

The airstrikes will allow the GNA to make a strategic advance against the militant group’s positions in Sirte, according to the US Defense Department.
