RIO DE JANEIRO (Sputnik) – Belmonte became the first Spanish female swimmer to win an Olympic gold on Wednesday.
She finished the distance in 2 minutes and 04.85 seconds. Australia’s Madeline Grove won silver, while Japan’s Natsumi Hoshi took bronze.
Wednesday was the first time that the Chinese failed to take gold in the event since 2004.
Belmonte has also won bronze at the Rio Games, in the 400m individual medley earlier this week.
