As many as 5,700 hectares (14,085 acres) of land in Spain’s Galicia have been destroyed in wildfires since the beginning of the week, a 2,000-hectare increase since Thursday, local media reported Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Earlier media reports had claimed that some 3,700 hectares of forest had been affected by the fires.

According to the Europa Press news agency, five fires are currently active in Galicia.

The fires have been affecting the region since the start of the week, with its authorities announcing "second-level" emergency situation.

The region typically faces summer wildfires every year. Last year, almost 12,000 hectares of forest were affected by wildfires.
