WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, in an op-ed published in Le Monde on August 12, called for an international investigation into Turkey’s coup.
"In terms of an international… investigation I would refer you to the Turks. We [the United States] would not take a position on it," Trudeau stated when asked about the possibility of an independent probe.
The United States, Trudeau noted, understands that Turkey will continue to prioritize its own security as they seek to hold accountable those who are responsible.
Ankara has accused Gulen and his followers of playing a key role in the mid-July attempted coup, which claimed the lives of more than 240 people.
Turkey has repeatedly asked the United States to extradite Gulen, but Washington said it needs evidence that proves the preacher’s involvement.
