US Forces Conduct Five Airstrikes in Libya in Support of Anti-Daesh Operations

US air forces conducted five strikes in Libya near the city of Sirte, according to the US Africa Command (AFRICOM).

US Forces Conduct 5 Airstrikes in Libya in Support of Anti-Daesh Operation
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US forces carried out five airstrike near the Libyan city of Sirte on Saturday and Sunday as part of an aerial campaign requested by Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said in a press release.

"These airstrikes bring the total number of airstrikes in support of Operation Odyssey Lightning, which began Aug. 1, to 46," the release stated on Monday.

The airstrike on Saturday targeted an Islamic State vehicle, while the Sunday strikes hit four terrorists’ fighting positions, according to the Africa Command.

The United States conducted no airstrikes in Libya on Friday, according to the release.

On August 1, the United States began a new airstrike campaign at the request of, and in coordination with the GNA aimed at fighting the Islamic State militants.

This training, which included firing multiple weapon systems and different fire maneuvers, is to prepare the Marines to provide limited support in the event of a crisis in the U.S. Africom area of responsibility - Sputnik International

The campaign, called Operation Odyssey Lightning, will allow the GNA to make a strategic advance against the terror group’s positions in Sirte, according to the US Defense Department.

The Islamic State, also known as Daesh and Arabic and outlawed in Russia and many countries around the world, gained a presence in Libya in the turmoil following the 2011 overthrow of leader Muammar Gaddafi.
