WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Scott noted that it appears all of the locally-transmitted Zika cases have occurred in the same area of the city of Miami.
"Today, the Florida Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed two additional individuals have the Zika virus in Miami-Dade County," the release stated. "Both of these cases are local transmissions."
Additionally, he noted the Department of Health will be sending in commercial pest control companies to help with mosquito control in the entire Zika-affected county.
The first cases of locally-transmitted Zika turned up in Florida last month. Pregnant women or women attempting to become pregnant have been warned to avoid the Miami neighborhood where these transmissions have occurred.
The current Zika outbreak started in Brazil in the spring of 2015. The virus is transmitted by daytime-active mosquitos and does not cause serious complications in adults. However, the virus can cause severe brain defects and microcephaly in newborns.
