MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Boko Haram extremist group began large-scale attacks in northeast Nigeria in 2009. Last year, the group expanded attacks into neighboring Niger, Cameroon and Chad. The extremist group pledged allegiance to the Daesh, outlawed in Russia and many other countries, in March 2015.
"Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE at harbour in Kangarwa yesterday successfully repelled suspected remnants of Boko Haram terrorists attack. The alert troops rose to the occasion and dealt a decisive blow on the insurgents, by killing 16 of them and recovering arms and ammunitions from them," the statement published Monday reads.
During the operation, 11 soldiers and one officer were wounded, the press service added.
