WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Trump said the Democratic Party had taken the votes of African-Americans for granted and had taken advantage of African-American citizens.
"The Democratic Party has failed and betrayed the African-American community," Trump said in his speech on Tuesday night. "I am asking for the vote of every African-American citizen struggling in our country today who wants a different and much better future."
Recent opinion polls give Trump as little as one percent of the approximately 40 million strong African-American community, but he focused his speech on law and order issues in a bid to attract their support.
"It is the first duty of government to keep the innocent safe… Our job is not to make life comfortable for the rioter, it is to make life more comfortable for the African-American parents who want their children to walk safely home from school," Trump added.
