Daesh, outlawed in Russia and many other countries, has taken responsibility for a failed August 17 attack on a Russian police station, according to SITE Intelligence Group, a Maryland-based company that tracks online activity of white supremacist and jihadist organizations.
During the assault, two persons attacked a road police station in the town of Balashikha, near Moscow. According to reports, the attackers intended to steal weapons.
One of the criminals used an axe to strike a police officer. Officers opened fire in response, but the second attacker grabbed an officer's gun and injured another officer.
Both attackers were shot dead in the assault. Two police officers have been injured, one classified by medics as heavily wounded.
According to a report by Kommersant, the attackers were Usman Murdalov, 21, and Sulim Israilov, 18, both ethnic Chechens. Their IDs were found in their bags after the incident, along with a receipt for the purchase of two axes some 20 minutes prior to the attack.
Earlier reports suggested that the attack was simple vengeance, as a driver's license of one of the attackers' relatives had been reportedly confiscated by police.
